Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Summo Posnaniensi

The present-day Gothic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Summo Posnaniensi was erected after 1431 at the latest.

Originally, the oldest church within the Poznan stronghold stood in this place. It was probably  the oldest church in the whole entire Piast rulership (the first Polish dynasty) It should be called a castle chapel as it was a stone pre-Romanesque building related to the palace complex built here by Mieszko I in the second half of the 10th century.

This sacred building was created  before the arrival in Poland of the Czech princess Dąbrówka. She was already a Christian while her future husband Mieszko I was going to be baptized. The temple was built under the invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The glass installation surrounding the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Summo in Ostrów Tumski presents an outline of the relics of the Palatium of Mieszko I and his wife Dobrawa, a building from the Piast dynasty from over 1000 years ago.

The installation is commemorating the first seat of Mieszko I and Dobrawa in Ostrów Tumski and was recognized by the jurors of the prestigious American competition CODAawards 2022 as the best architectural project in the world in the “Liturgical” category.
